Yard N'Garden Day 2018

Yard N' Garden Day 2018

The Cornell Cooperative Extension Masters Gardeners will host their annual Yard N’ Garden Day on Saturday, March 24th, 2018. This year, Yard N’ Garden Day will feature a variety of topics including growing hops, integrated pest management in your garden, and identifying giant hogweed and lookalike invasive species.

Chris Hansen is one of the owners of Climbing Bines Craft Ale and Hop Farm. Chris graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1997, and currently works as a math teacher at Penn Yan Middle School.  Climbing Bines Hop Farm, at 511 Hansen Point Road just off Rte. 14 south of Dresden and Climbing Bines Craft Ale Company that was born from it, is one of New York State’s first farm breweries. They specialize in small batch, hand-crafted ales brewed on site, using their own estate-grown hops, and barley harvested just a few miles away. Always experimenting with new brew recipes and styles, their house ales include an IPA, Amber, Pale, Blonde, and Hefeweizen. They also have a selection of ciders as well as non-alcoholic beverages for children and non-drinkers.

Caroline Boutard-Hunt will discuss integrated pest management for the garden. Caroline has been the agricultural educator at CCE Yates since May 2017. She earned her master’s degree in Entomology from Cornell University in 2007. From 2008 until 2016, she and her husband ran a certified organic vegetable and grain farm. In addition, they raised pastured chickens and cultivated forest-grown shiitake mushrooms. Integrated Pest Management is a pest control technique used by farmers to keep insects and pathogens at below economically damaging thresholds. These concepts can also be applied to home gardens and homesteads that wish to balance care of the environment with common garden pests.

The final speaker will be Patricia Wakefield-Brown, discussing identifying giant hogweed and lookalikes. Patricia is the invasive species outreach and volunteer specialist at the Finger Lakes Institute/FL-PRISM. She received her A.A.S. in Natural Resource Conservation and an A.S. in Environmental Science from Finger Lakes Community College. Patricia then went on to get a B.S. in Environmental Science with a concentration in Aquatic Ecology from The College at Brockport, State University of New York. As the Invasive Species Outreach and Volunteer Specialist, she does educational outreach with land and homeowners, college students and K-12, throughout the Finger Lakes region and Great Lakes Basin.

Refreshments and raffle tickets will be available at the event. Bring your own mugs and get an extra raffle ticket. Following the workshop, all attendees will receive several FREE vegetable and flower seed packets, and seedlings! The workshop will be held at the Yates County Office Building Auditorium, 417 Liberty Street, Penn Yan from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, with registration starting at 8:30 AM. Price for the workshop is $15.00.  Registration deadline is March 21st, 2018.
