Yard N' Garden Day 2017
While Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to think spring! The Cornell Cooperative Extension Masters Gardeners will be hosting their annual Yard N’ Garden Day on Saturday, March 11, 2017. This year, Yard N’ Garden Day will feature a variety of topics including cultivating log-grown mushrooms, beekeeping, and growing grapes. John Hammer will discuss the topic of growing mushrooms. After working with both DEC and private foresters involved in his 2005 timber harvest, he developed a strong interest in his woodlot and forest health in general. As a result of this interest, he became a Master Forest Owner (MFO) volunteer in 2009. One of the other MFO’s interests in log-grown shiitake mushroom cultivation led to his initial involvement in mushroom cultivation in 2014. This soon grew into a small commercial operation and has since expanded to include other forest-grown mushroom varieties.
Mickey Orr will discuss the topic of beekeeping. Mickey has been an amateur beekeeper for the past several years. Prior to starting his career as a part-time beekeeper, he spent many years working as a programmer/business analyst. According to Mr. Orr, “bees are one of the most important resources in an ever-changing environment when it comes to the food chain.”
The final speaker will be CCE-Yates County’s own Gillian Trimber. Gillian joined the Finger Lakes Grape Program in September 2015 as the Viticulture Educator. She graduated from Cornell in 2013 with a degree in Viticulture & Enology. Gillian wears a number of different hats in her job with the FLGP, including managing the Teaching & Demonstration Vineyard, helping with various field trials and projects, organizing and planning meetings, and being our lead contact for new and prospective grape growers.
Following the workshop, all attendees will receive several FREE vegetable and flower seed packets. The workshop will be held at the Yates County Office Building Auditorium, 417 Liberty Street, Penn Yan from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, with registration starting at 8:30 AM. Price for the workshop is $15.00. To register, please call the CCE-Yates County office at 315-536-5123 or online at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/yardngarden2017_257.
