Woodlot Management Planning

Woodlot Management Planning: ecosystem and watershed considerations

Ontario County Master Forest Owner (MFO) Workshop and Woods Walk 2019

Date: Saturday, April 27th

Time: 10:30am-3pm, workshop from 10:30 am to noon, BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) & woods walk to follow from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm

Location: Workshop will take place at the Naples Library and the woods walk will be at Camp Cutler

The Master Forest Owner program provides private woodland owners of New York State with the information and encouragement necessary to manage their forest holdings wisely. Over 140 experienced and highly motivated volunteer MFOs are available statewide, ready to assist neighbor woodland owners with the information needed to start managing their woodlands, through free site visits to landowner’s properties.

Join the Ontario County MFO program for a workshop and woods walk to learn about and observe practices used to mitigate impacts to the surrounding ecosystem and watershed when developing a woodlot management plan. During the workshop, Alaina Robarge, District Educator at Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District (S&WCD) will explain forestry best management practices (BMPs) to protect water quality. Brice June, DEC Forester, will discuss how to develop a woodlot management plan. Invasive Species Educator, Brittany Lagaly, from Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) will discuss the impacts of invasive species on the native ecosystem. Brice June will lead the woods walk through an actively managed woodlot and discuss the different management projects and practices that have been implemented.

Attendance is FREE. Attendees are asked to dress for the weather and wear boots or shoes suitable for walking on woodland trails. Participants are encouraged to bring note-taking supplies and a water bottle. Please plan for a short drive from the library to Camp Cutler, where we will have lunch together before the woods walk.
