About the Preserve:

Twelve acres of the Preserve’s 145 acres are now regularly mowed fields, an ongoing project to restore them to native grass meadows. Twelve years ago grasses, goldenrod, and asters in the fields disappeared as invasive porcelain berry and mugwort began to take over. The Museum was able to begin a yearly mowing program seven years ago in an attempt to control the invasives. Two years ago with the volunteer assistance of James Carracciolo, mowing on a more regular basis began and progress is being made. Invasives are decreasing and there are signs of natives reappearing. One field was sowed with native grass and wildflower seed 5 years ago. It is flourishing and is a model for what we hope to achieve.
