Monthly Beekeeping Workshops

Join us for our Monthly Beekeeping Workshops at East Meadow Farm.

April:   Weather dependent, new date will be announced shortly.
Installing a “Package” of honey bees. Carl will demonstrate how to set up the basic hive and install a package of bees. Also discussed will be what goes on for honey bees in the spring, appreciating the value of drawn comb vs. helping the bees to draw new comb by feeding “light” sugar syrup, and reviewing the honey bee development timetable.

Bonus topic: buying bees vs Free Bees! Time to set up bait hives!

May:  Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 6:30pm
Evaluate colony health, then Super Up! How to read a colony. Revisit the bait hive., talk about swarming bees. What’s a Nuc? Making increases during the natural time for it. Types of splits. When to split/ How to split/ Is it a good idea?

June:  Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 6:30pm
Mite count demonstration. Discuss the varroa mite and the dangers it poses. Also will discuss treatments and other bee pests and diseases. Discuss Swarm control in more detail- what to look for and what you can/should do.

July:  TBD
Taking honey off? Looking through the entire hive to assess whether there are full boxes of capped honey. Evaluating the continuation of worker population build up. Should we break the brood cycle? Make splits? Requeen?

August: Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 6:30pm
Getting hives ready for conversion to winter mode. How are winter bees different? The importance of controlling mites at this time. Mite treatment options for the fall.

September:  Tuesday September 24, 2019 at 6:30pm
Preparing hive boxes for winter. How much honey do they need to have? Should we feed? Still counting mites? Can we winter over nuc colonies?
