Invasive Species 101 Webinar - Classroom Sign Up

Invasive Species 101

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County Department of Natural Resources is partnering with the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA) to educate students about Invasive Species and the threats that they present to the native environment of Long Island.

As a part of those efforts, our team has developed Invasive Species Activity Kits available to classrooms at no cost and welcome you to join one of our “Invasive Species 101” Webinar sessions.

The Invasive Species Activity Kits are designed for youth in grades 5th - 8th grade. The materials within the kits provide each classroom with an Invasive Species themed board game, Invasive Species Study Cards, access to educational videos and materials, printable handouts such as activity worksheets, fact sheets and educational brochures and two additional innovative classroom activities –all with an invasive species focus!

With the board game, Invasion! The Invasive Species Takeover, students learn about Invasive species specific to the Long Island region and their impacts to the local environment through a journey akin to the Classic board game Candy Land.

The Invasive Species Study Cards provide students with the ability to identify and correlate each relevant Invasive Species with its presence in a natural habitat and their current status on the New York State Tier List.

One classroom activity provided within the kit highlights the use of NY’s iMapInvasives technology and software to challenge students to map and track invasive species that they can find in their community, including any presence they can see on their school property.

In addition to the delivery of these activity kits, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County will host three webinar sessions available to the public focused on introducing the Nassau County community to the concept on Invasive Species, their effects on the local environment and current management practices in place to support the effort to prevent the spread of Invasive Species and protect our native flora and fauna.

These webinars will be hosted via Zoom and will be held on the following dates:
April 19th at 10:00 a.m.
April 19th at 2:00 p.m.
April 21st at 11:30 a.m.
