Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Management Presentation & Woods Walk
Date: Sunday October 21st, 2018
Time: 11am – 3pm
Location: FLCC Muller Field Station and Finger Lakes Land Trust Wesley Hill Nature Preserve
Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County at FLCC Muller Field Station for a presentation on management of hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA) given by a member of the NYS Hemlock Initiative. Following the presentation, a woods walk into a stand of hemlocks with HWA present will provide opportunity for hands-on identification and observation of both hemlock trees and HWA.
In this talk you'll learn about the importance of hemlocks on our landscape, the threat of HWA, the present and future of HWA management in New York, and how you can be involved in slowing the spread of HWA in your area. Hemlock trees are a foundation species in our forests and are threatened by the invasive HWA. The New York State Hemlock Initiative addresses this threat through research, management practices, and outreach.
Please plan for a short drive from the Field Station to the Honeoye WMA to practice identification and observation skills in the woods. The walk is intended for all, including beginners just learning how to identify hemlock trees and HWA, as well as those with intermediate knowledge and/or skill looking to stay engaged.
Attendance is free, but please let us know you are coming so we can plan for parking and handout materials. Everyone is invited. Attendees are asked to dress for the weather and wear boots or shoes suitable for walking on woodland trails. Participants are encouraged to bring note-taking supplies and a water bottle.
Brunch will be provided – bagels, muffins, granola bars, and juice!
