Deck The Halls Community Service and Healthy Cooki

Join Seneca County CCE to help make the holidays merrier for local seniors!  With Thanksgiving and the holidays just around the corner, pull out your creativity and yummy recipes and start baking. Excited to make your favorite Holiday recipes? Looking for some new healthy ideas to try? Looking to give, give, give instead of receive?  Do you need to let your creativity run wild with sugar plums & gumdrops while you give to those who may need cheering up?  This Holiday Season at the Cooperative Extension office, 4-H and the Nutrition Department have planned an event to build ginger bread houses to brighten a senior resident’s holiday and exchange yummy cookies, swap recipes, and evoke community holiday spirit.

Open to all, bring your family or come alone to have a good time and celebrate the holiday spirit:

Build a ginger bread house with candy, frosting and all the other yummy trimmings. The ginger bread houses built will be delivered to a local nursing home on December 8th, or can be delivered to your favorite senior relatives personally. 4-H will be providing all the supplies for the ginger bread houses, just your creativity is needed. This is open to all ages, including non-4-Hers. We encourage adults to accompany young children, ages 5 to 7 years.

Simultaneously, we will be hosting a community cookie exchange with a healthy twist. We want you to get creative and experiment with swapping out unhealthy ingredients for healthier ingredients, like replacing apple sauce for sugar. A healthy options handout will be available on the CCE website which list ingredients and swap out conversions. The idea is to bake a dozen cookies and you will get a dozen new cookies. Please bring the recipes on a 3x5 index card and a container to carry home your treats.  All the recipes will be displayed online at a future date.

Come to Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension for a merry and yummy time. Please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County office if you have any questions about the event, 4-H or our nutrition program.

RSVP by Monday, December 4th to help us plan on supplies.
