2023 Spring Gardening School

CCE - Nassau Spring Gardening School Programs

The Garden-Based Learning programs are horticulture programs that are designed for hobbyist gardeners.  These introductory workshops provide participants with new information and the confidence to improve their own gardens and landscapes.

 

March 2023

Dividing Dahlias: Dahlias are the glory of late summer and fall.  Find out the techniques of saving, overwintering, and planting them, so these spectacular flowers will bloom for you year after year.  March is time to divide your old tubers, so you can have healthy, flourishing plants later in the season.  Come learn from the best in this workshop led by members of the Mid Island Dahlia Society.

Starting Seeds Indoors: Planting seeds indoors can give you gourmet vegetables suited to your particular taste, flowering annuals in a rainbow of colors, and the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.  Come learn how simple, cheap, and enjoyable starting seeds can be!

Composting: Don’t like waste?  Try recycling nature’s way.  Save money, reduce your garbage, and nourish your home garden all in one.  Learn simple techniques to turn your organic waste into a valuable soil amendment and find a way to adapt this easy practice to your specific property and schedule.

April 2023

Vegetable Gardening:  We all like food– so let’s grow what we like!  Find out the general needs of vegetables, and specific ways to grow the ones you want for your table, while learning from the examples in our demonstration gardens.

Herb Gardening:  Herbs are some of the biggest bang-for-your-buck plants in the garden.  Enjoy exploring the plants in our demonstration herb garden and learn which ones are best suited for you.

Growing Food in Containers and Small Spaces:  Think you need a big property to grow food?  Think again – there are edible plants for any space and situation!  Come find out food-growing techniques and options that are adaptable to tight spaces.

May 2023

Designing a Wildlife Garden:  Connecting to nature in the garden can help you feel happier at the same time you help the environment.  Find out how to arrange, plant, and manage your yard so you can both nurture and enjoy the beneficial creatures that live here.

Native Pollinator Gardens:  Bees, butterflies, birds, and beetles – we rely on pollinators not only for our food, but for the continued health of our entire landscape.  Walk through our demonstration gardens to meet some of our native pollinators, and learn ways to have a beautiful garden that keeps these important workers healthy and happy.

Introduction to Permaculture:  The word “permaculture” is a combination of “permanent” (what we now call “sustainable”) and “agriculture”.  In permaculture, the needs of people and the needs of the environment meet – and they both win.  Find out the basics of a home permaculture approach, from simple ethics to adaptable and practical application, as you learn to look at your landscape with new eyes.

June 2023

Rose Gardening: Roses are the most popular flower in the world.  Come enjoy the glory of our formal rose garden and learn the basics of rose care so you can grow your own beautiful blooms.

Fruit in the Home Landscape:  There’s a reason fruit is called “nature’s candy” – it’s delicious!  You can easily grow a range of delectable fruits at home in Nassau County, so come look at our berry patch, and we’ll teach you how to have your fruit and eat it too.

Gardening with Children:  Want to share your joy of gardening with a child in your life?  Come to this class to learn the different ways children interact with nature, and how we can provide them with delightful, safe gardening experiences at home.  (Please note: this class is for adults, to give you information to use with your child at home; please do not bring your child to the class.  For children’s classes, visit our 4-H Youth Development page.)

Cost:  All program fees listed in description cover the entire length of the session. Some programs may require a materials fee, which is included in the listed cost.

In the event of inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled. If the program is cancelled due to insufficient registrations, all fees will be refunded within one-week.

Location: All programs will be at the East Meadow Farm unless otherwise noted.
The East Meadow Farm is located at 832 Merrick Avenue, East Meadow, NY 11554
