Saturday June 7th & Sunday June 8th Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is hosting a Fiber Producers Symposium. You will find information on all the topics being presented during the weekend.
The price for the weekend is $35/one day or $60 for the entire weekend - which includes lunch, refreshments and all handouts!
Saturday: Animal Nutrition & Effective Marketing Techniques
9am: Welcome, Introductions & Logistics 9:15am: Basic Ruminant Nutrition with Dr. Robert Van Saan This presentation will provide the needed background to understand how and why we feed llamas, sheep, goats and alpacas the type of diets high in forage. Unique differences between llamas and alpacas, sheep and goats will be highlighted. Forage analysis will be emphasized relative to how it influences the feeding program and need for supplementation.

1:00pm: Ruminant Nutrition for growth, lactation, pregnancy and fiber production with Dr. Robert Van Saan This presentation will build upon the information presented in the morning session. How requirements for essential nutrients change relative to physiologic state (maintenance, growth, pregnancy and lactation) will be discussed relative to needed changes within the feeding program. The importance of forage quality to meet needs will be emphasized. How nutrition may or may not influence fiber growth and quality will be addressed.
3:15pm: Facilitated Roundtable Discussions Topics include: Meshing farm life with good marketing; Emergency newborn care on the farm; Maintaining Good Neighbor Relations; Strategies for diversifying your fiber farm; Coping with common health issues/What’s in your Emergency Medical Kit?

Sunday: Developing a Client Base; Displays, Pricing and Cooperative Marketing; Choosing the Right Products for Your Fiber & Marketing Products
9am: Welcome, Introductions & Logistics 9:15am: Developing a client base for product sales and selling your products (Ann Merriwether) OR Displays, Pricing and Cooperative Marketing with Laura Biasillo (Agricultural Economic Development Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County) This hands-on workshop will cover how you can create displays for your products which not only compliment them but also are pleasing to the eye. We will also cover what to consider when pricing your products and how you can think about cooperatively marketing your products.

How to Choose the Best Products for Your Fibers with Wendy Daily

Effective Marketing Techniques with Laura Biasillo (Agricultural Economic Development Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County) This workshop will cover the different types of customers, how to identify your target customer and how to hone your marketing message.

You can also drop off your fiber to be picked up by the fiber mill to be made into roving, yarn, or felt.
