Fall 2014 Horticulture Workshops

Dividing Perennials Properly
Thursday, September 25th 6 p.m.

Perennial plants return year after year without replanting but to keep them looking their best some maintenance is required.  If your flowers are no longer blooming well or look overcrowded, it may be time to divide. See a live demonstration on digging and dividing perennial plants.  Learn how, when, why and which perennials should be divided.  Led by Master Gardener Mary Matwey.  Cost will be $8 per person.  Pre-registration is required to ensure we have enough materials.

Bulbs, Corms, Tubers and Rhizomes, Oh My!
Wednesday, Oct 15th, 6 p.m.  

Some of our most cherished flowers; tulips, daffodils, dahlias, lilies grow from structures collectively known as bulbs.  But there is a lot more to it than that.  Learn how and when to plant a large variety of flower bulbs.  Planting depths, timing, succession of bloom and care will be discussed.  Winter storage techniques for the tender types and even garlic, onion and potato culture will be covered.  Led by Master Gardener Elaine Gregory. Cost will be $8 per person.  Pre-registration is required to ensure we have enough materials.  

Lasagna Gardening
Thursday, October 9th 6 p.m.

Thinking of starting a garden next spring?  It’s easier than you might think.  Lasagna gardens, a method of layering organic materials and soil, take the digging and tilling out of gardening. Come see a live demonstration of an easy method to create or expand a garden bed.  Another technique, sheet mulching, will also be covered. Taught by Horticulture Program Educator, Linda Svoboda.  Cost is $8 per person.  Pre-registration is required to ensure that we have enough materials.

Compost Indoors with Worms - FULL
Thursday, October 16th, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Cost: free

Learn how to compost indoors with a worm bin.  We’ll cover worm biology, bin maintenance, and how to harvest finished compost. Each participating household will receive a worm bin made from a plastic tote bin, complete with bedding and some starter worms.  Instructor for this workshop is Kevin Mathers, Resource Educator. There is no charge for the workshop, but space is limited, and registration is required.   

Home Composting Workshop
Wednesday, October 29th, 6:30- 8:00 p.m.
Cost: free

This demonstration style workshop will help you learn the basic steps for successful home composting.  We’ll explore the pros and cons of various composting methods and bin designs, and learn how to how to use compost to improve gardens.  The workshop will be held rain or shine.  Instructor for this workshop will be Kevin Mathers, Resource Educator.  There is no charge for the workshop.

4-H Youth Activity “Celebrating Evergreens”
Saturday, December 6th 10 a.m. to Noon

Evergreens have been used to decorate our homes through the winter months for centuries. Join 4-H groups in learning about the different types of evergreen trees and create some fun and simple crafts with evergreen boughs and pine cones.  Make a fresh evergreen table centerpiece, a pine cone snowman, and a pine cone ornament. Crafts are suitable for ages 5 and up with adult accompaniment. Cost of program is $10 per family to cover cost of materials.  Pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is November 28th. (You do not need to be a 4-H member to attend.)
