Back in July, Homer Town residents interested in raising chickens and other fowl received exciting news –a new local law, permitting landowners in residential neighborhoods, to own chickens and other fowl was passed. The next question these same folks might ask is ‘how’. To answer that question Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County invites folks interested in raising poultry to join us on Saturday, October 30th from 10:00 am – 11:30 am (with an additional ½ hour for 4-Hers interested in learning poultry showmanship) at the Albright Grange in East Homer NY.
This 1.5-hour workshop, led by Dana Havas, CCE Cortland Ag Team Leader, and Sarah Champion, a long-time farmer who raises broilers, layers and turkeys, will cover all the basics including pros & cons, how to choose the right bird, health and management, housing requirements, legal requirements, and processing and pricing poultry products. In addition, other Cortland County town and village laws that define poultry ownership will be covered. Folks are encouraged to come with plenty of questions and attendees with numerous resources to get them started in poultry.
