Kentucky Derby Hat Contest 2021

Welcome to the 2021 Kentucky Derby Hat Contest!  Open to all 4-H Members and Cloverbuds!

Part Southern tradition, part spectacle, the Kentucky Derby Hat Parade is much of what makes “The    Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” one of the greatest people watching events in the world! From the fantastic to the awe-inspiring, there are no rules or limits when it comes to making your Derby hat.

Did you know that wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is believed to be good luck! The long-established   fashion trend was originally started by women. However over the last few years, many men have taken part in the tradition as well!

Within the seated sections of Churchill Downs, you will find hats of elegance and style. Generally speaking, women wear wide-brimmed, “Southern Belle” inspired hats. The hats can be decorated with flowers, feathers, bows and ribbons of any color to express creativity and individuality.

In the Infield, hats are usually a bit more eccentric! You will see hats in all shapes and sizes, as well as some hats with humorous themes!

· Hats must be completed and photos turned in by April 22nd

· Photos will be posted on the Oneida County 4-H Youth Development Facebook page to be voted on by the public

· Facebook Voting will be open from April 24th to April 30th

· Prizes will be awarded at the Kentucky Derby Party (May 1st)

Everyone must submit the finished product for evaluation and display at the Boonville Fair or equivalent.  Evaluations will be on 7/21/2021.  Mark this date on your calendar!
