If you are getting recertification credits you will be asked to provide your current NYSDEC license when signing in at the event.

30-HOUR COURSE OVERVIEW

The 30 Hour Course is a series of classes for individuals working in the horticulture industry who need certification as a commercial pesticide applicator technician in NYS DEC categories 3 and 25. DETAILED SESSION SCHEDULE:

Session 1 - Monday, February 5, 2024 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM)
DEC Rules and Regulations, Updates.*
Chris Wainwright, NYS DEC.
Rules and regulations required to become a certified pesticide applicator, detailed look at the requirements for record keeping and reporting. Questions asked and information required at on-site inspection explained.

Session 2 - Monday, February 5, 2024 (1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) -
Personal Protective Equipment, Pesticide Exposure Risk and Toxicity & Interpreting Pesticide Labels.*
Mike Stanyard, Cornell University NWNY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team.
Personal safety is key when using pesticides. This session describes what is and what is not appropriate for use. Reading a label correctly is critical both to making an effective application and to protect people and the environment by preventing misuse of product. 

Session 3 - Monday, February 5, 2024 (3:15 PM to 4:15 PM) -
An In-Depth Look at IPM.*

Understand the 6 steps of IPM and techniques for monitoring, identification of the pest, the biology, thresholds, control options, and evaluation.

Session 4 - Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) -
Applied Ornamental Entomology.*
Liz Berkeley, CCE-Monroe Plant Insect & Disease Diagnostic Clinic. 
Correct identification of insect pests is a prerequisite to developing a management plan. Participants will gain an understanding of insect identification, lifecycles, feeding patterns, and damage to landscape ornamental plants along with cultural, alternative, and traditional management options.

Session 5 - Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (1:00 PM to 3:15 PM) -
Intro to Turfgrass and Their Diseases.*
Walter Nelson, Horticulturist, Retired, CCE-Monroe.
Covers pesticide security including proper transportation, storage, and disposal, safety precaution issues including poisoning symptoms, residue, and tolerance. Fundamental concepts of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be presented.

Session 6 - Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (3:15 PM to 4:15 PM) -
Pesticides, Water, and the Environment.*

Participants will gain knowledge of turf insects, scouting and monitoring techniques, traditional and alternative control options will be discussed.

Session 7 - Monday, February 12, 2024 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) - 
Critters in the Landscape.*
Paul Curtis, Dept. of Natural Resources, Cornell University.
Covers the legal framework and management of damage caused by wildlife in lawn and landscapes. Cultural practices, pesticide use, and other management techniques will be discussed.

Session 8 - Monday, February 12, 2024 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) - 
Turfgrass Pests.*
Kyle Wickings, Cornell University. 
Participants will gain knowledge of turf insects, scouting and monitoring techniques, traditional and alternative control options will be discussed.

Session 9 - Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM) - 
Pesticide Core Competency I.*
Mike Helms, Pesticide Safety Education Program, Cornell University. 
This session covers the types of plant diseases seen in our landscapes and gardens. Focuses on understanding the fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens causing diseases. Various methods discussed for management of plant diseases. Spotted Lantern Fly will also be discussed.

Session 10 - Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) -
Pesticide Core Competency II.*

Brian Eshenaur, NYS IPM, Ornamentals Educator.
This session covers the types of plant diseases seen in our landscapes and gardens. Focuses on understanding the fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens causing diseases. Various methods discussed for management of plant diseases. Updates on Spotted Lantern Fly will also be discussed.

Session 12 - Wednesday, February 21, 2024 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) - 
Weeds of the Landscape.*
Liz Berkeley, CCE-Monroe Plant Insect and Disease Diagnostic Clinic.
Weed identification is key to creating a management plan. Attendees will be instructed how to identify common and invasive weeds. Pesticide resistance and management. Cultural and pesticide management options will be covered.
