30-HOUR COURSE OVERVIEW

The 30 Hour Course is a series of classes for individuals working in the horticulture industry who need certification as a commercial pesticide applicator technician in NYS DEC categories 3 and 25. DETAILED SESSION SCHEDULE:

Session 1 - Tuesday, January 31, 2023 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM)
DEC Rules and Regulations, Updates.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for CORE)
Chris Wainwright, NYS DEC.
Rules and regulations required to become a certified pesticide applicator, detailed look at the requirements for record keeping and reporting. Questions asked and information required at on-site inspection explained.

Session 2 - Tuesday, January 31, 2023 (1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) -
Personal Protective Equipment, Pesticide Exposure Risk and Toxicity & Interpreting Pesticide Labels.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (2.00 credits for CORE)
You must attend BOTH Session 2 and Session 3 for recertification credits.

Personal safety is key when using pesticides. This session describes what is and what is not appropriate for use. Reading a label correctly is critical both to making an effective application and to protect people and the environment by preventing misuse of product. 

Session 3 - Tuesday, January 31, 2023 (3:15 PM to 4:15 PM) -
An In-Depth Look at IPM.*

You must attend BOTH Session 2 and Session 3 for recertification credits.

Understand the 6 steps of IPM and techniques for monitoring, identification of the pest, the biology, thresholds, control options, and evaluation.

Session 4 - Thursday, February 2, 2023 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) -
Pesticide CORE Competency 1.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for CORE)
Mike Helms, Pesticide Safety Education Program, Cornell University. 
Pesticide types, formulations, toxicity, and environmental considerations of pesticide use, calibration, mixing calculations, and application equipment.

Session 5 - Thursday, February 2, 2023 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) -
Pesticide CORE Competency 2.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for CORE)
Mike Helms, Pesticide Safety Education Program, Cornell University. 
Covers pesticide security including proper transportation, storage, and disposal, safety precaution issues including poisoning symptoms, residue, and tolerance. Fundamental concepts of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be presented.

Session 6 - Tuesday, February 7, 2023 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) -
Turfgrass Pests.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for 3A, 3B, 25)
Kyle Wickings, Cornell University.
Participants will gain knowledge of turf insects, scouting and monitoring techniques, traditional and alternative control options will be discussed.

Session 7 - Tuesday, February 7, 2023 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) -
Applied Ornamental Entomology.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for 3A, 3B, 25)
Liz Berkeley, CCE-Monroe Plant Insect &Disease Diagnostic Clinic.
Correct identification of insect pests is a prerequisite to developing a management plan. Participants will gain an understanding of insect identification, lifecycles, feeding patterns, and damage to landscape ornamental plants along with cultural, alternative, and traditional management options.

Session 8 - Thursday, February 9, 2023 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) -
Weeds of the Landscape.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for 3A, 3B, 25)
Liz Berkeley, CCE-Monroe Diagnostic Clinic. 
Weed identification is key to creating a management plan. Attendees will be instructed how to identify common and invasive weeds. Cultural and pesticide management options will be covered.

Session 9 - Thursday, February 9, 2023 (1:00 PM to 4:15 PM) -
Ornamental Plant Pathology.*
*This course qualifies for recertification credits (3.00 credits for 3A, 3B, 25)
Brian Eshenaur, NYS IPM, Ornamentals Educator. 
This session covers the types of plant diseases seen in our landscapes and gardens. Focuses on understanding the fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens causing diseases. Various methods discussed for management of plant diseases. Spotted Lantern Fly will also be discussed.

Session 10 - Thursday, February 16, 2023 (9:00 AM to 12:15 PM) -
Critters in the Landscape.*

Paul Curtis, Dept. of Natural Resources, Cornell University.
Covers the legal framework and management of damage caused by wildlife in lawn and landscapes. Cultural practices, pesticide use, and other management techniques will be discussed.

Session 11 - Thursday, February 16, 2023 (1:00 PM to 3:15 PM) -

Intro to Turfgrass and Their Diseases.*

Walter Nelson, Horticulturist, Retired, CCE-Monroe.
How to grow healthy turf and linking expectations about lawn quality combined with learning about various turf diseases will be discussed. Covers IPM approach to managing diseases and keeping turf healthy.

Session 12 - Thursday, February 16, 2023 (3:15 PM to 4:15 PM) -

Reviewing the relationship of how pesticide applications impact the environment especially water and how an applicator can minimize adverse impacts while effectively managing the pest.
