Poultry shown at the 4-H Youth Fair (and NYS Fair) must have a negative pullorum test result or be from a pullorum negative certified flock or hatchery.
Doves, pigeons, and waterfowl are exempt from this rule.
Market Auction Birds do not have to be tested if they have proof of purchase from a certified negative flock.
- The negative pullorum test can be from a clinic which is valid for 90 days or from an annual NPIP certified test which is valid for 1 year.
- All animals should be secured in cages or a crate for transport and while in line to be tested.
- Previous pullorum legs bands should NOT be cut off as they can be reused for this years testing. The exception to this is if the band was lost or if it now too small for the bird’s leg.
- Please check (and treat ) the legs and under the feathers of the birds for leg mites and lice NOW so that it will hopefully be resolved by the time the clinic rolls around. Birds found to severely infested may be excused due to anemia and biosecurity concerns.
- Please record approximately how many birds you expect (rough idea) and if you expect any turkeys. Turkeys can NOT have the plate type test done and need to have their blood drawn and sent out to Cornell.
- Families should ideally keep their birds away from another families birds (for example leave in or near their car) in case of a non negative test is seen on a bird. A non negative bird can be tested again in one month to see if the bird can clear the infection from its system and test negative in a re-test, allowing it to then show/attend fair.
