Land Access & Land Conservation Series

WEDNESDAY NOV 1ST WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT.

Land Access & Land Conservation Series
Oct 4th, Oct 18th, Nov 1st & Nov 15th
5:30-7pm

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County in partnership with Farmland for the New Generation New York for a four part series where we explore land conservation in Broome County, ways to keep farmland in production and access farmland to start, or expand, your farming operation.

o   THIS HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT: Join us for a landowner gathering at Jones Park on Wednesday Oct 4th starting at 5:30pm. We’ll walk the trails, discuss potential land uses and forage along the way for some wild edibles. This will be a great opportunity to learn about land conservation efforts in Broome County as well as about foraging on your own land.

o   THIS HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT. IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR A WEBINAR AT A LATER DATE: On October 18th at 5:30pm join us for a session focused on “Understanding Your Land”. We’ll cover the typical soil types here in Broome County and the types of agriculture which thrive. We’ll bring in community partners such as the Soil & Water Conservation District & Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Southern Tier Land Conservancy to discuss their available programs to landowners relative to land conservation and encouraging biological diversity. We’ll also discuss different tools to help make your land available to beginning or existing farmers. And we’ll welcome a real estate appraiser to talk through valuing your land and easements.

o   On November 1st at 5:30pm we’ll host a session focused on “Building Relationships & Planning for the Future”. We’ll talk about the how, when, and why of estate planning and planning for a future generation to keep land in production with a lawyer and accountant. We’ll discuss leases and other tools available which may be of particular interest in ensuring a more equitable relationship. We invite you to bring a family member or next generation interested in taking over the management of your land.

o   On November 15th at 5:30pm we’ll wrap up our series with a “Farmer/Landowner Speed-Networking Session”. This will be an opportunity to find a farmer looking for additional land in 2024 and discuss how your land might fit their needs.

There is no cost to attend but registration is required to ensure enough materials and refreshments are available.
