American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

American Red Cross lifeguard training provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. The lifeguard class includes comprehensive training in water rescues, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid skills.
Pretest: Upon arrival, participants will be required to pre-test for the course, which will consist of
- 300 yard swim
- 20 yard swim, retrieve a brick from the bottom of the deep end, and swim 20 yards with the brick
- Tread water for 2 minutes with no hands
This course will be held at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills, located at 4437 Kear Road, Canandaigua NY 14424, with classes running Sunday from 12pm-4pm, and Monday and Tuesday from 9am-5pm each day. This course is designed as blended learning, meaning that participants will have coursework to complete online before attending the in-person sessions at camp. Participants who do not complete the online materials in advance will be released from the program without certification, and no refunds will be provided.
Participants should be prepared to be in the pool for several hours each day (bring swimsuit and towel, sunscreen, etc), but should also bring a change of dry clothes for the classroom portions of the training.

Participants have the option to pre-order boxed lunches from Wegmans on the registration form. Orders for lunches will be placed one week before the course. Registrations received AFTER the order is made will be responsible for bringing their own lunch. Overnight accommodations will also be available, for a fee of $25/night. Participants will be housed in our Gleason Lodge, which provides double occupancy room with bunk beds, and access to a kitchenette, bathrooms and showers. Overnight guests would be responsible for bringing their own bedding (Sleeping bag, or blanket and sheets) as well as any foods and personal items.
