2020 Winter Gardening Workshops

Season Extension and Low Tunnel Construction
Saturday, March 21st
1 to 2 p.m.
CCE Broome Ag. Development Center

You can easily add 2 weeks to the start and end of the growing season by the use of low tunnels, (frost blankets with supports).  Construct you own 4 ft. low tunnel hoops and learn tips and techniques from Master Gardener Volunteers at Cutler Botanic Garden.  Hoop material, ½ inch EMT, will be provided.  Please dress for the weather and bring a pair of garden gloves. The cost of this class is $15 and includes 3 hoops. Each hoop is 4 ft. wide, 4 ft. tall. Additional hoops will be available at the class for $5 each. Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.

Pruning Trees and Shrubs
Saturday, March 21st 
2:30 to 4 p.m.
CCE Broome Ag. Development Center

Work with Master Gardeners in CBG learning proper techniques pruning trees and shrubs.  Learn how, why and when to prune, proper tools, tool maintenance, etc.  We will be going out to the gardens for the last half hour so please dress for the weather.  (In the event of rain/snow cancellation, class will not be rescheduled.) Class size is limited so pre-registration is required. Cost is $10 per household.  Please bring a pair of garden gloves and hand pruners.

Build a Better Tomato Cage and More
Saturday, April 18th 
1 to 2 p.m.

Cutler Botanic Garden grounds

Tired of those wimpy wire tomato cages? Construct your own cages from concrete rebar wire with the help of Master Gardener Volunteers and CCE Staff.  Each cage is 5 ft. tall and 2 ft. in diameter.  They also make a space saving trellis for peas, beans or cucumbers. All materials and tools needed are provided.  Please dress for the weather and bring a pair of garden gloves. The cost of this class is $15 per household and includes and includes 2 cages. Additional cages will be available for $5 each. We will also cover some tips on growing tomatoes.  Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.

Building and Planting in Raised Beds
Saturday, April 18th 
2:30 to 4 p.m.

Cutler Botanic Gardens grounds

Learn about the benefits of growing in a raised bed and how to construct a raised bed that suits your needs. Learn space requirements and growing techniques for most common vegetables plants. This class is demonstration only. Please dress for the weather.  The cost of this class is $10 per household.  Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.

Rain Barrels and Irrigation
Saturday, May 9th
1 to 2 p.m.

Cutler Botanic Garden grounds

Learn what you need to know about adding a rain water collection and irrigation system to your yard. We will discuss the problems of storm water runoff and ways to mitigate them. Then we will visit the newly developed Rainwater Collection and Irrigation Demonstration site and other infiltration systems at Cutler Botanic Garden. The cost of this class is $10 per household.  Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.
