Descriptions of sessions:

The 10 Things You Need to Know About Lead Poisoning

Kathy Paciello, Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

“The evidence is clear - lead exposure damages the structure and function of a child's developing brain, stealing the potential for academic achievement, resulting in long-term health and behavioral impacts and preventing that child from reaching their full potential over the course of their life. Lead exposure is entirely preventable, and the outcomes of prevention accrue to the individual, the family and the community.” – Ruth Ann Norton.

This presentation will include information about Lead Poisoning, services that the Lead Poisoning primary and secondary prevention programs provide and more!

Audience: Family/Group Family Child Care; Center Staff & Directors; School Age Staff & Directors, Preschool; LE; Parents

Topic Areas: OCFS: 2,4 CBK: 4,5 CDA: 1

Language in Early Childhood to Build Relationships and Learning

Tammy Ablang, Child Care Council Credentialed Trainer

In this training we will take a look at what language we use with children. We will look at the power of open ended questions. We will investigate ways to be a better communicator with children, build stronger relationships and lead children into a successful future.

***Let’s explore the answers to these questions and more…**

Too often we think that we need to compliment a child’s behavior, rather than complimenting the child.

We sometimes intervene in children’s play by asking a simple yes or no question. Do we expect a quick response or even get one?

How do we expand language in children without circle time?

Are children learning to communicate or problem solving during free play or should they be sitting in circle time longer?

Are we having conversations with children? What does that look like?

Audience: Family/Group Family Child Care; Center Staff & Directors; School Age Staff & Directors, Preschool; LE; Parents

Topic Areas: OCFS: 1,3,7 CBK: 1,4 CDA:1,3

Keeping Infants Safe

Diversity

Ellen Olson, MS, Child Care Council Credentialed Trainer

We live in a diverse world.  As early care and learning professionals it’s important to be able to meet the needs of all of the children in our care.  It’s impossible to know about all of the cultures of children who may enter our program but it is possible to develop a cultural humility and to learn about and practice culturally responsive care.  We will explore diversity, culturally responsive care and why it’s important to think about even in a setting that has no diversity.

Audience:  Family/Group Family Child Care; Center Staff & Directors; School Age Staff & Directors, Preschool; LE; Parents

Topic Areas: OCFS 3,4,7 CBK 2,3,4 CDA 1,2,4

The Sensory Play Experience

Robin Saxe, Mohawk Valley Community College

Sensory rich lessons and centers can be incorporated into any early childhood curriculum. We will discuss the benefits of sensory activities for learning and emotional development. You will have hands on experiences with multiple sensory stations and take back an encyclopedia of activities and ideas for your classroom.

Audience: Family/Group Family Child Care; Center Staff & Directors; School Age Staff & Directors, Preschool; LE; Parents

Topic Areas: OCFS 1,3 CBK 1,4 CDA 8

Resilience

Tim Hathaway, Prevent Child Abuse NY

Resilience is a film that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of disease, substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior. However, as experts and practitioners profiled in RESILIENCE are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These communities are using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease.  This presentation will feature a viewing of the film along with a facilitated discussion.

Audience:  Family/Group Family Child Care; Center Staff & Directors; School Age Staff & Directors, Preschool; LE; Parents

Topic Areas: OCFS 2 CBK 5 CDA 8
