2018 Summer Gardening Workshops

“Canning with Ann” Food Preservation Series with Master Preserver Ann Supa in the Broome County Regional Farmer’s Market Commercial Kitchen:

Canning with Ann – Strawberry Jam    Friday, June 23rd 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25

Come and learn proper techniques for both hot water bath and freezing strawberry jams and jellies. See what types of equipment are required and maintenance to keep them working properly. You will get recipes, learn food preparation techniques and bring home a sample of what is made that night. Canning with Ann – Principals of Pickles (Dill/Sweet/Relish) Tuesday, July 18th 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25 

Come and learn proper techniques for making both dill and chunk pickles. We’ll discuss the best places to purchase local cucumbers in bulk for your recipes. We’ll review the types of equipment required and food preparation techniques. You will get recipes and bring home a sample of what you prepare that night. Canning with Ann – Tons of Tomatoes!           Thursday, September 12th 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25

Come and learn how to make both tomato sauce and salsa. We’ll cover the best varieties to use as well as proper food preparation techniques. You’ll learn about the difference between pressure canning and hot water bath and when to use which. You’ll leave with recipes and a sample of what we make that night. Herbal First Aid Kit Workshop
Wednesday July 11th, 6:30 to 7:30 pm
Cornell Cooperative Extension Lawrence Conference Room                                            Cost: $5 per person to cover cost of materials

Ever wonder what to do with all those herbs you grow throughout the season?  Master Gardener Elaine Gregory will teach you how to not only preserve some of your favorite herbs, but also how to turn them into oils, salves, tinctures and vinegars.  Each participant will receive an herbal salve or hand sanitizer and recipes to make your own.

Much Ado in the Garden

Broome County Regional Farmers Market/Cutler Botanic Garden

Celebrate the Renaissance Era in Cutler Botanic Garden and the surrounding campus.

Featuring: The Madrigal Choir of Binghamton, EPAC’s Steampunk Romeo & Juliet, Master Gardener tours of Cutler Botanic Garden, pageantry, royals and jesters, plenty of photo opportunities, vendors, raffles, plant sale, food and more! Adults & children of all ages welcome. No pets, please. Costume dress is encouraged! Free entry but a donation of $5 will be welcome support for Cutler Botanic Garden. Pre-registration requested to plan for vendors and food.

40th Anniversary Celebration of the Master Gardener Volunteer Program Saturday, August 18th, 1pm to 3pm            
Ag. Development Center Atrium, CCE Broome

It has been 40 years since the Master Gardener Volunteer program began in Broome County and it has been growing ever since.  Join past and present Master Gardeners, staff and special guests for refreshments, speakers, garden tours and loads of information about the Master Gardener Volunteer program. Reminisce while you watch slides of how the Master Gardener Program and Cutler Botanic Garden have evolved. Free of charge but please register so we can plan refreshments accordingly.

Annual Fresh Food Face Off        
Wednesday, September 19th, 5pm to 8 pm
Broome County Regional Farmers Market/Cutler Botanic Garden

Come and enjoy the beauty of Cutler Botanic Garden while attending the signature fundraiser of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County. Local chefs are challenged to create the “Best Taste” using local, in-season ingredients while being paired with NYS wines and beers. Local dignitaries award the “Best Taste”; attendees award the “People’s Choice”. Enjoy the premiere local foods scene while supporting programming in our community. Growing American Ginseng in the Southern Tier
Saturday, September 22nd, 1pm to 5pm
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County

Join Ginseng Expert Bob Beyfuss for a classroom presentation followed by woods walk. This program is designed to teach participant how to get started growing American ginseng on forested land in the Southern Tier. This class will begin by teaching you how to assess a forested site for suitability for growing wild simulated ginseng.

The cost for the class is $25/person and you must pre-register as space is limited. Participants will receive a copy of The Practical Guide to Growing Ginseng by Bob Beyfuss.  Attendees may register online by visiting: . 

About our speaker: Bob Beyfuss retired from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County in 2009 where he served as the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader and also as the NY State specialist for American Ginseng Production for Cornell University Cooperative Extension. Bob received his Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 1973, majoring in Botany and his Master's degree in Agriculture from Cornell University in 1987. His Master’s project was “The History, Use and Cultivation of American Ginseng”. He is the author of "American Ginseng Production in NY State", "The Practical Guide to Growing Ginseng" (a 65 page grower’s guide), "Ginseng Production in Woodlots" "The Economics of Woodland Ginseng Production", (both published by the USDA National Agroforestry Center) “Growing Gourmet Mushrooms from A to Z” “Companion Planting” and several other fact sheets regarding ginseng, organic gardening and mushroom growing in forested environments. Bob is also an Internationally Certified Arborist.
