2017 Summer Gardening Workshops

“Canning with Ann” Food Preservation Series with Master Preserver Ann Supa in the Broome County Regional Farmer’s Market Commercial Kitchen:

Canning with Ann – Strawberry Jam   
Friday, June 23rd 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25

Come and learn proper techniques for both hot water bath and freezing strawberry jams and jellies. See what types of equipment are required and maintenance to keep them working properly. You will get recipes, learn food preparation techniques and bring home a sample of what is made that night. 

Canning with Ann – Principals of Pickles (Dill/Sweet/Relish)
Tuesday, July 18th 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25

Come and learn proper techniques for making both dill and chunk pickles. We’ll discuss the best places to purchase local cucumbers in bulk for your recipes. We’ll review the types of equipment required and food preparation techniques. You will get recipes and bring home a sample of what you prepare that night.  

Canning with Ann – Tons of Tomatoes!                  
Thursday, September 12th 6pm-8pm
Cost: $25

Come and learn how to make both tomato sauce and salsa. We’ll cover the best varieties to use as well as proper food preparation techniques. You’ll learn about the difference between pressure canning and hot water bath and when to use which. You’ll leave with recipes and a sample of what we make that night. 

Vegetable Garden to Table Workshop - Culinary Herbs

Cost: $10 per household to cover cost of materials

Learn how to grow a variety of culinary herbs in your garden or in containers and techniques for their preservation and use. Air drying, dehydrating, and freezing techniques will be demonstrated. Pre-registration is required. 

Season Extension/Low Tunnel Construction – Fall Vegetable Crops

Cost: $15 per household to cover cost of materials.

Late summer is the time to sow seeds for fall crops like broccoli, kale, cabbage and salad greens.  Construct your own 4 ft. low tunnel hoops and learn tips and techniques from Master Gardener Volunteers at Cutler Botanic Garden.  Hoop material, ½ inch EMT, will be provided.  Please dress for the weather and bring a pair of garden gloves. The cost of this class is $15 and includes 3 hoops. Each hoop is 4 ft. wide, 4 ft. tall. Additional hoops will be available at the class for $5 each. Class size is limited so pre-registration is required.

Broome County Regional Farmers Market

Come and enjoy the beauty of Cutler Botanic Garden while attending the signature fundraiser of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County. Local chefs are challenged to create the “Best Taste” using local, in-season ingredients while being paired with NYS wines and beers. Local dignitaries award the “Best Taste”; attendees award the “People’s Choice”. Enjoy the premiere local foods scene while supporting programming in our community. Check out our Facebook (Fresh Food Face Off) page for more information and to keep up to date on what restaurants, wineries, breweries are added on a regular basis.

Dividing Perennials
Thursday, September 28th @ 6:00pm

One of the simplest ways to gain more plants in your garden is to divide your existing plants.  Learn how to dig and divide perennial plants, which plants should be divided in fall and the benefits of this routine maintenance. Work with Master Gardeners to gain hands-on experience and learn proper techniques on dividing perennials.  Class size is limited so pre-registration is required. Cost is $15 per person. Please bring a pair of garden gloves. 

Look for our annual Cutler Botanic Garden wreath sale.  Pre-orders of wreaths and swags begins October 30th,  2017.
