GAPs training

Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Cornell Vegetable Team, and the Cornell National GAPs Program along with assistance from NY Dept. Ag & Mkts, will be presenting a training for farm food safety - GAPs (including Harmonized GAPs) on December 6-7, 2016 in Binghamton, NY at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County office, located at 840 Upper Front St, Binghamton.

Over the past few years, media coverage of several high profile foodborne illness outbreaks in produce have made national news. Both the produce industry and the federal government have stepped up demands for fruit and vegetable farms to meet food safety practice standards. Commonly, the reference to farm food safety is termed GAPs (Good Agricultural Practices).

Our training covers the basic USDA GAPs and Harmonized GAPs programs. Many buyers require some food safety training and practice implementation by growers.

This training is based on buyer-driven demands. The training being provided does not satisfy the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule that some growers may fall under.

During the training, the mechanics of food safety, risk assessment of practices, reducing microbial risk, and GAPs certification and other buyer requirements will be covered. Day 2 will be spent assisting growers in writing their food safety draft plan by incorporating what was learned from Day 1. Please plan on bringing a laptop (if you own one) on Day 2 as it will make working on your plan much easier.

Day 1 will take place 8:30am-5pm. Day 2 8:30am-3pm. The cost per farm is $65, an additional $20 to a second, more computer savvy, employee to attend on Day 2 (to cover the cost of lunch). Your registration includes lunch, snacks, and coffee, as well as a packet of food safety reference materials and digital files of food safety resources.

Pre-registration is required by December 2nd.
