First Fridays for Parenting Educators

Monthly workshops to support the professional development and effectiveness of parenting educators.

First Friday of each month, 9:00 a.m. – Noon

Registration fee: $10 per session

Facilitator’s Toolbox - Working With Parents in Groups - This interactive, skills building workshop will introduce resources on adult learning, group dynamics, and facilitation tools.

November 7, 2014

Teen Relationships - We will explore tools that parenting educators can use with parents of teens when talking about teen relationships.

December 5, 2014

Parents Supporting Early LiteracyParenting practices and behaviors are predictors of children’s readiness and success in school.  Learn how parenting educators can help parents nurture early literacy and school readiness. 

February 6, 2015

Working with Diverse Families– Review research on current trends in structures, including stepfamilies, kinship caregiving, incarcerated parents, etc.  Learn and practice skills for working with families with diverse structures, situations, and cultures.

March 6, 2015

Supporting children’s social and emotional development - Learn and practice tools to help parents learn how to teach and support children’s ability to interact positively with others, self-regulate their behavior, and effectively communicate their feelings.

April 3, 2015

Positive Discipline – using consequences appropriately Positive discipline provides structure and guidance to help children learn and manage appropriate behaviors.  But, parents will still want to know what to do when children misbehave.  This workshop will help educators develop skills for teaching about natural and logical consequences and positive time-out.

May 1, 2015

Understanding AddictionsAlcohol and other substance use, abuse, and addiction have impacts on family dynamics.  This workshop will help participants to gain a basic understanding of use, abuse and addiction to inform their work with families.

June 5, 2015

Understanding PovertyPoverty impacts children’s development and parenting skills and styles.  This workshop will help participants to expand their understanding of the effects of poverty and develop skills for working with families living in poverty.
